Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), visited Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) on February 19, 2025, as part of his India tour focused on promoting sustainability in the global maritime sector. During his visit, Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of shipping, was also present. He held discussions with Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairperson of JNPA, and CMD, VPPL, where he was briefed on JNPA’s advancements in maritime operations, including the development of the Vadhvan Port Project Ltd., the 13th Major Port of India.
The discussions at JNPA revolved around the port’s commitment to green and efficient operations, emphasizing its ongoing and upcoming sustainability initiatives. Dominguez also toured key infrastructure developments such as the JNPA Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Centralised Parking Plaza (CPP), gaining insights into the port’s integrated approach to economic growth and environmental responsibility. He commended JNPA’s efforts in operational efficiency, environmental conservation, and contribution to the IMO’s decarbonizing goals for the shipping industry.
Reflecting on his visit, Dominguez praised JNPA for its hospitality and emphasized the port’s commitment to expansion, innovation, technology, and environmental conservation. Unmesh Sharad Wagh reiterated JNPA’s dedication to aligning with global sustainability goals, highlighting their focus on eco-friendly practices and operational efficiency. The upcoming Vadhvan Port will be a 100% green port, underscoring JNPA’s commitment to environmentally sustainable infrastructure. Dominguez’s visit signifies a step towards enhancing international cooperation for sustainable maritime development, with JNPA driving India’s green port initiatives in collaboration with the IMO.
