India’s election as the Vice President of the International Organization of Aids to Marine Navigation (IALA) at its inaugural General Assembly in Singapore signifies a significant milestone for the country in global maritime affairs. This achievement comes at a crucial juncture as IALA transitions from a non-governmental organization (NGO) to an inter-governmental organization (IGO), with India playing a pivotal role in this transformation. The election highlights India’s growing influence in shaping international maritime navigation policies and sets the stage for further expansion of its leadership in the field.

IALA, established in 1957, has been instrumental in coordinating marine aids to navigation worldwide and setting global standards for maritime safety. The recent ratification by 34 member states to transform IALA into an IGO aims to enhance its regulatory capabilities and standardize marine navigation practices. India’s active involvement in this transition underscores its commitment to improving global maritime governance and ensuring the safety of marine transportation on a global scale.

Led by Shri T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, India’s delegation played a crucial role in securing the Vice Presidency position at IALA. Looking ahead, India is set to host key international events, including the IALA Council meeting in December 2025 and the IALA Conference & General Assembly in Mumbai in September 2027. These events will serve as platforms for India to showcase its advancements in maritime technology, navigation systems, and international collaborations, further solidifying its leadership in the global maritime sector.
