IMW: Odisha’s Cultural Story Told Through Sand Art

Odisha showcased its rich maritime heritage at the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, highlighted by an impressive sand art installation created by renowned artist Padmashri Sudarsan Pattnaik. This work was commissioned by the Commerce & Transport Department of the Government of Odisha, emphasizing the state’s cultural significance.

During the event, Pattnaik had the honor of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who greeted him with a warm “Jai Jagannath,” reflecting Odisha’s spiritual identity. Pattnaik presented a sand art piece inspired by Bali Yatra, which pays homage to Odisha’s ancient maritime traditions and its historical trade connections with Indonesia. He also explained the importance of Kartik Purnima, a sacred day when ancient Odia seafarers embarked on voyages, symbolizing bravery and exploration.

The Prime Minister praised the artwork for its deep representation of India’s maritime legacy. The sand installation, measuring 30 feet by 10 feet, was displayed at the Odisha Pavilion, celebrating the vital relationship between oceans and civilization. Pattnaik expressed pride in representing Odisha at this prestigious event, noting that sand art serves as a bridge between the state’s illustrious past and the aspirations of a revitalized maritime India.
