The Department of Fisheries (DoF), part of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, has entered a technical cooperation agreement with the FAO to enhance Blue Port infrastructure in India. This initiative aims to merge advanced technology with sustainable practices, focusing on three key fishing harbors—Vanakbara in Diu, Karaikal in Puducherry, and Jakhau in Gujarat—with a total investment of ₹369.8 crore.
The Blue Ports framework will incorporate digital systems, satellite technology, rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient solutions, and effective waste management. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, emphasized that these ports serve as crucial drivers of economic growth and ecological sustainability.
Likhi highlighted the role of innovative technologies like 5G and AI in improving port operations. He noted that existing programs, such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), are already aiding the modernization of the fisheries sector.
As part of the FAO collaboration, pilot upgrades at Vanakbara and Jakhau will focus on investment planning and operational efficiency. Training will be offered to both public and private entities to enhance technical skills and promote best practices in the industry.
