India is taking steps to strengthen its presence in the global merchant shipping sector by hosting a two-day global maritime conference called Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue in the national capital on November 18 and 19. This conference, the first of its kind in India, is being co-hosted by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Observer Research Foundation. Representatives from 60-65 countries are expected to participate in this dialogue, highlighting India’s efforts to expand its role in global maritime trade and merchant shipping.
Despite being one of the most populous nations and having one of the largest economies globally, India’s maritime influence has not reached its full potential. The dialogue aims to attract the attention of global stakeholders towards India’s aspirations to play a more significant role in international maritime affairs. As India continues to grow and is on track to become the third-largest global economy, the maritime domain becomes increasingly crucial for international collaborations in commerce, connectivity, trade, and human well-being.
The concept note released by the Observer Research Foundation emphasizes India’s contribution to global growth and its evolving role in international relations. It stresses the importance of deepening engagement with diverse stakeholders to shape perspectives on India’s ambitions, presence, and interests in maritime governance. The inaugural remarks at the conference will be delivered by Ministry Secretary T K Ramachandran, setting the tone for discussions on India’s maritime future and global relevance in the sector.
