The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) are launching a pioneering program called “Sagar Mein Yog – Complete wellness at sea” to prioritize the welfare of Indian seafarers. This initiative aims to integrate yoga and holistic wellness practices into the lives of seafarers, addressing the unique challenges they face on extended voyages. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Shri Shyam Jaganathan, Director General of Shipping, and Shri Milind Kandalgaonkar, General Secretary and Treasurer of NUSI, marking a significant milestone in India’s maritime history.
Key features of the program include implementing yoga and wellness curricula in maritime training institutes, providing psychological support services for mental health, developing specialized wellness programs for maritime professionals, and establishing support networks for seafarers and their families. The DGS will offer essential support, logistical assistance, and collaboration with wellness experts to facilitate the program’s rollout. The flagship program ‘Sagar Mein Yog’ underscores India’s commitment to setting global benchmarks for seafarers’ well-being.
The program builds on NUSI’s previous initiatives, such as the mental health program ‘NUSI Sahara’, launched in 2017, to provide comprehensive support to Indian seafarers at all levels. By expanding to training institutes and maritime facilities, the initiative aims to create a more resilient and healthy maritime workforce. This collaborative effort between DGS and NUSI showcases India’s dedication to the well-being of its maritime community and serves as a global example for the holistic well-being of seafarers.
