During a joint press conference with Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the crucial partnership between India and Seychelles in the maritime initiative known as Vision Mahasagar. He underscored Seychelles’ strategic importance in promoting regional security, economic collaboration, and sustainable development throughout the Indian Ocean.
Vision Mahasagar, which stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions, is an expanded maritime framework that builds on India’s earlier Sagar doctrine. This initiative aims to enhance cooperation beyond South Asia, addressing issues such as maritime security, economic connectivity, disaster resilience, and sustainable development across the broader Indian Ocean Region and parts of the Global South.
Seychelles holds a vital geographic position along key sea routes linking Asia, Africa, and Europe, making it essential for monitoring piracy, illegal fishing, and other maritime threats. Its extensive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) provides India with enhanced operational capabilities in the Western Indian Ocean, further strengthening collective maritime security efforts.
Modi characterized Seychelles not merely as a neighboring country but as an “inalienable partner” in achieving shared objectives for regional stability and security. This partnership reflects a commitment to fostering a secure and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
