India and Seychelles have strengthened maritime cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the mutual recognition of seafarers’ training and certification. This agreement, a result of Prime Minister Modi’s visit, enables qualified Indian seafarers to work on Seychelles-flagged vessels, enhancing employment opportunities and aligning with global maritime standards.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from President Patrick Herminie during his first visit to Seychelles since 2015. Their meeting included planting a Coco de Mer sapling, symbolizing environmental cooperation. India also delivered a Fast Patrol Vessel and other aid, reinforcing commitments to maritime security and sustainable development.
During a joint press conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the vital partnership with Seychelles under the Vision Mahasagar initiative. He emphasized Seychelles’ strategic role in enhancing regional security, economic collaboration, and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean, framing the nation as an “inalienable partner” in achieving shared stability and security objectives.
The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Saksham, an offshore patrol vessel, recently visited Port Victoria, Seychelles, to bolster maritime cooperation and regional partnerships. The crew engaged in meetings, training exercises, and sports events with Seychelles counterparts to enhance interoperability and mutual learning. The visit underscores India’s commitment to maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
Seychelles will assume the Chair of the Contact Group on Illicit Maritime Activities (CGIMA) following the second plenary meeting on September 5, 2024. With a focus on combating piracy and ensuring maritime security, Seychelles will collaborate with partners to address threats in the Western Indian Ocean. This leadership underscores the country’s commitment to promoting stability in the region.
