The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has achieved a significant milestone with the launch of a new passenger ferry connecting Iceland and Mokpo, Korea. This vessel represents the first project classified by IRS for a Korean owner, reflecting the organization’s expanding international presence.

Constructed by Miraero Shipbuilding for Dea Bu Marine Transport, the ferry will serve the Inter-Island route along the Korean coast. Notably, the owner opted for IRS classification voluntarily, even though such vessels aren’t mandated to have classification in Korean waters. This decision underscores the owner’s confidence in IRS and sets a benchmark for the classification of similar vessels in the region.

In the upcoming weeks, the ferry will undergo essential surveys, including mooring tests, in collaboration with relevant authorities. The final delivery of the ship is anticipated in late June 2025.

Saikt Roychowdhury, IRS’s head of operations, emphasized that this project highlights IRS’s growing acceptance among demanding international clients. He stated that Dea Bu Marine Transport’s choice of IRS classification signifies a substantial advance for the organization in Korean waters.
