On Tuesday, the Indian Coast Guard welcomed ‘Samudra Pratap’, its inaugural pollution control vessel developed and manufactured domestically. This landmark achievement significantly bolsters India’s capacity to respond to maritime pollution and underscores the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in defense production.
The vessel, launched under the 02 PCV Project at Goa Shipyard Limited, is set to play a crucial role in various operations, including marine pollution control, enforcement of maritime laws, search and rescue missions, and protection of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The induction ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Coast Guard and representatives from the shipyard.
Equipped with advanced technology, such as a 30mm CRN-91 gun and a retractable stern thruster, ‘Samudra Pratap’ represents a significant advancement for the Coast Guard. With more than 60% of its components sourced domestically, the vessel aligns with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, enhancing India’s pollution response capabilities throughout the Indian Ocean Region.
This induction marks a pivotal step forward in strengthening India’s maritime security and environmental protection efforts.
