In his keynote address at the Indian Ocean Conference in Muscat, external affairs minister S Jaishankar emphasized the need for countries in the Indian Ocean region to work together and coordinate policies to ensure security and stability. He highlighted India’s crucial role in stabilizing economies, responding to emergencies, and promoting connectivity in the region. The conference, supported by the foreign ministries of India and Oman, is timely as geopolitical shifts are occurring due to changes in West Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.

Jaishankar pointed out the challenges faced by countries in the Indian Ocean region, including resource constraints and difficulties in meeting sustainable development goals. He alluded to the impact of China’s policies, such as the Belt and Road Initiative and activities in the South China Sea. India is actively engaging with its Indian Ocean neighbors, providing assistance during crises like the Covid-19 pandemic and economic challenges in Sri Lanka. Initiatives like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the International North South Transport Corridor are enhancing connectivity in the region.

India has emerged as a reliable first responder in the Indian Ocean, offering assistance during conflicts and natural disasters. The Indian Navy is actively involved in countering threats in the maritime domain through initiatives like the Information Fusion Centre and partnerships on white shipping. India is also strengthening naval capabilities in partner countries like Vietnam, Mauritius, and Mozambique. By fostering trusted communications in the digital era and harmonizing activities in the Indo-Pacific, India is playing a pivotal role in shaping regional cooperation and security.
