India’s maritime sector is rapidly evolving, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted the country’s ports as among the most efficient in the developing world during the Maritime Leaders Conclave at the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai. He noted that outdated colonial shipping laws have been replaced with modern regulations tailored for the 21st century.
Modi emphasized that India’s ports are performing exceptionally well, often surpassing those in developed nations. The newly implemented shipping laws enhance the role of state maritime boards and encourage the integration of digital technologies in port management. Under the Maritime India Vision, over 150 initiatives have been introduced, leading to significant advancements in the sector.
The capacity of major ports has doubled, and turnaround times have improved dramatically. Additionally, cruise tourism is on the rise, and inland waterways have seen remarkable growth, with cargo movement increasing by more than 700%. The number of operational waterways has expanded from three to 32, and the net annual surplus of ports has increased nine-fold over the past decade.
Modi asserted that the maritime sector is a crucial driver of India’s growth, significantly enhancing trade and port infrastructure over the last ten years.
