Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of India’s maritime sector and ports in driving the country’s progress and prosperity. He acknowledged India’s rich maritime history and the sector’s role in nation-building. Despite being a recognized sea power in the past, the maritime sector was neglected after independence. However, in the last decade, significant milestones have been achieved, and the government is committed to further strengthening the maritime ecosystem.
PM Modi highlighted the doubling of cargo handling capacity at major ports and the construction of new roads to enhance port connectivity. The government’s focus on “ports for prosperity and progress” has brought about substantial changes in the maritime sector. The mantra of “ports for productivity” is also being advanced to develop maritime infrastructure. Additionally, steps are being taken to promote coastal shipping, as evidenced by the approval of the ‘Coastal Shipping Bill’ by the Lok Sabha.
The Coastal Shipping Bill aims to regulate vessels engaged in trade within Indian coastal waters, promote coastal trade, and encourage domestic participation. By ensuring the development of a coastal fleet owned and operated by Indian citizens, the bill contributes to national security and commercial needs. PM Modi also emphasized the development of inland waterways as part of the strategy to bolster India’s maritime sector. He reiterated the benefits reaped by India and the world when the maritime sector is strong, underscoring the government’s continuous efforts to fortify this crucial sector.
