The Indian Navy recently commissioned INS Nirdeshak, a cutting-edge Survey Vessel, a significant milestone for the nation’s maritime capabilities. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata, the vessel boasts over 80% indigenous content, showcasing India’s commitment to self-reliance in shipbuilding. Equipped with advanced hydrographic systems, INS Nirdeshak enables precise oceanic mapping and data collection, enhancing India’s maritime capabilities.

Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar of the Eastern Naval Command praised INS Nirdeshak as a state-of-the-art addition to the fleet, highlighting its ability to perform a wide range of hydrographic surveys and contribute to humanitarian assistance efforts. The vessel’s commissioning crew was commended for achieving a high state of readiness, reaffirming India’s expertise in ship design and construction. With a length of 110 meters and a displacement of approximately 38,000 tonnes, INS Nirdeshak is powered by two diesel engines and can accommodate 230 crew members.

INS Nirdeshak’s commissioning underscores the Indian Navy’s trust in Aatmanirbharta, or self-reliance, in shipbuilding. The vessel represents a significant achievement in indigenous shipbuilding, with foreign naval forces increasingly seeking hydrographic cooperation with the Indian Navy.
