India must move away from reliance on foreign shipping lines and develop its own maritime ecosystem to take a leadership role in the industry, according to Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. In an interview with The Hindu, he emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency in maritime trade.
Sonowal highlighted India’s commitment to advancing green shipping fuels and expanding its shipbuilding capabilities. He noted that the country is also focusing on container manufacturing as part of its broader strategy to enhance its maritime infrastructure. Additionally, the minister discussed the progress of the Sagarmala projects, which aim to improve infrastructure related to port-led industrialization.
