India’s shipping ministry has successfully repatriated over 975 Indian seafarers from West Asia amid ongoing regional tensions. In the past 24 hours, 11 seafarers were returned, highlighting the ministry’s efficient crisis-response mechanism. Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, stated that the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) operates a 24/7 helpline, having handled around 4,900 calls and over 10,000 emails since its establishment during the current crisis.

The control room serves as a command and response hub for issues concerning merchant vessels and crew safety. Mangal reassured that although many Indian seafarers have been relocated safely, the ministry continues to monitor 18 Indian-flagged vessels in the area for crew security and operational continuity.

The helpline addresses distress situations and coordinates with ship owners and charterers regarding operational changes while utilizing Navy and Coast Guard assistance for real-time maritime advisories. Mangal emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring all Indian seafarers are safe, as the ministry reviews insurance mechanisms to alleviate financial burdens on shipping firms operating in the volatile region.
