The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has officially designated three ports—Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat, VO Chidambaranar Port Authority in Tamil Nadu, and Paradip Port Authority in Odisha—as Green Hydrogen Hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). This is a pivotal advancement in India’s effort to develop a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem and transition to cleaner energy.

The NGHM, initiated by the Indian government, seeks to establish the nation as a global leader in green hydrogen production and export. It emphasizes large-scale hydrogen hubs that facilitate sustainable hydrogen economies, enhancing both production and consumption.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has hailed this recognition as a milestone in India’s maritime evolution. He emphasized that these ports will serve as key enablers of clean energy innovation, reinforcing the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The recognition aims to attract green investments and foster industrial involvement in sustainable fuel technologies.

With the recent guidelines issued on June 27, 2025, areas identified as Green Hydrogen Hubs can access various central and state benefits, promoting the growth of large-scale hydrogen activities to bolster India’s energy independence and environmental goals.
