INSV Kaundinya Completes Historic Maiden Voyage to Muscat
The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Kaundinya completed its maiden voyage from Porbandar, Gujarat, to Muscat, Oman, on January 14, 2026. This voyage highlights India’s maritime heritage and historic ties with Oman. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, emphasized its significance as "A Voyage Across Time," linking it to the longstanding cultural connections between the two nations.
Upon arrival in Muscat, the vessel was warmly received by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Omani officials. Jaiswal noted that this traditional stitched sail vessel, built without modern metal fastenings, draws inspiration from a 5th-century ship depicted in Ajanta Cave paintings. The vessel, named after the legendary mariner Kaundinya, embodies India’s indigenous maritime craftsmanship.
Minister Sonowal hailed the occasion as "a historic moment of pride," symbolizing the revival of India’s maritime legacy and its ties with the Gulf region. He praised the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the dedicated crew, acknowledging the ship’s role in bridging India’s rich maritime history with its future ambitions. The vessel’s unique design features culturally significant motifs, representing India’s enduring maritime traditions.
