The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Muscat is calling on citizens to contribute to its collection of maritime artefacts to help preserve Oman’s seafaring legacy. They are seeking items such as traditional ships, photographs, navigational tools, maps, documents, postage stamps, old currency, and other archaeological or historical artefacts related to Oman’s maritime history. Those interested in contributing can contact the ministry via email at hshukaili [at] mht.gov.om

This initiative reflects the ministry’s dedication to safeguarding Oman’s maritime traditions, which have played a significant role in the country’s culture and economy for centuries. The collected artefacts will likely be used to enhance the upcoming Maritime History Museum in Sur, South Sharqiyah. The museum is expected to boost the region’s heritage and tourism sectors while also contributing to Oman’s economic growth by preserving its seafaring traditions.

In a notable development, Oman has recently become a member of the International Congress of Maritime Museums (ICMM), making it the first Middle Eastern government entity to join the organization. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is one of only two affiliate members from Asia, alongside the Indonesian Hidden Heritage Creative Hub in Jakarta. This membership further demonstrates Oman’s commitment to preserving its maritime heritage and engaging with the international maritime museum community.
