A delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) visited the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) in Mumbai to enhance bilateral cooperation in the maritime sector. The visit aimed to deepen understanding of India’s maritime education and training systems.
Discussions held with DGS officials focused on India’s examination processes, maritime training courses, and the Comprehensive Inspection Programme (CIP), which ensures the quality of maritime institutes nationwide. The delegation also evaluated India’s globally recognized seafarer competency framework, which produces highly skilled maritime professionals.
A key objective of the visit was to explore opportunities for employing Indian seafarers in Japan’s shipping industry, reflecting Japan’s interest in India’s well-trained maritime workforce. The Japanese officials sought to identify leading Indian maritime training institutes for potential collaboration and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
This visit highlights the strengthening partnership between India and Japan in maritime human resource development, safety standards, and sustainable shipping practices, reinforcing India’s position as a global hub for skilled seafarers committed to excellence and innovation in international shipping.
