On November 28, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) organized a one-day workshop focused on dock safety and the handling of hazardous chemicals. This event, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Directorate General, Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes (DGFASLI), took place at the JNPA Business Facilitation Centre. It gathered port officials, terminal operators, safety professionals, emergency responders, and industry experts to review risks associated with hazardous cargo movement.

The workshop aimed to enhance JNPA’s commitment to creating a safe and compliant operational environment by integrating global safety practices into everyday port activities. Key topics included regulatory frameworks, worker competence, radiation preparedness, and incident management strategies pertaining to chemical-related emergencies at port facilities.

Participants learned about national and international regulations governing the handling of hazardous materials and the responsibilities associated with cargo transport. Emphasis was placed on the necessity for trained personnel and effective supervision to avert potential incidents, while a session specifically addressed radiation safety protocols and emergency planning for radiation events.

The workshop is part of a broader national initiative aimed at strengthening hazardous chemical management across major ports. Esteemed attendees included Balasaheb Pawar, Deputy Conservator at JNPA, and Dinesh Kumar Shukla, Chairman of AERB, alongside distinguished experts from various institutions. JNPA plays a critical role as one of India’s leading container ports, overseeing multiple terminals and developments including a new deep-draft port at Vadhvan.
