Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is set to revolutionize the city’s transport and tourism with a new project that integrates urban renewal and water transport. The Kerala government has approved a budget of ₹3,716.10 crore for the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS). This initiative aims to enhance and beautify six main channels—Perandoor, Chilavannur, Edappally, Devara, Konononthuruthy, and Market Canal—expanding them to at least 16.5 meters. The development will include green spaces and decorated walkways, turning these areas into vibrant urban zones.

A new 11.5-kilometer waterway connecting Muttar to Chitrapuzha via Edappally Canal will introduce boat services every 30 minutes, featuring a fleet of ten new boats capable of passing under bridges with a clearance of 3.5 meters. KMRL’s plan also enhances intermodal connectivity, linking the U-Bahn route from Vyttila to Thevara Water, ensuring seamless urban mobility.

Additionally, the development includes a new promenade along the Chilavannur channel, designed to mirror Marine Drive, along with facilities for water sports. To improve water flow and reduce flooding during heavy rains, a new bridge on BUND Road is under construction, and another on Subash Chandra Bose Road is being rebuilt. The Kerala Water Authority is also establishing wastewater treatment plants in coordination with KMRL to support the project’s goals.
