The Mangaluru Water Metro project has received the green light from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, linking Bajal to Maravoor across the Netravati and Gurupura rivers. This approval came during a meeting focused on inland transport initiatives in Karnataka, where the establishment of a Karnataka Water Transport Training Centre in Mangaluru under the Central Government’s Sagarmala project was also sanctioned.
The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) will oversee the project’s development and is tasked with creating a detailed project report. Once completed, the water metro system is expected to be India’s second-largest, following Kochi.
In discussions with senior maritime and transport officials, the meeting also addressed the development of state ports, the progression of water transport projects, and necessary facilities for cargo handling.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the review of land allocation policies for ports and instructed action against encroachments. He requested a drone survey to assess the islands in Uttara Kannada for their comprehensive development, to be submitted within three months. Additionally, he instructed officials to analyze the functioning of ports in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat, ensuring robust support for the Mangaluru water metro’s advancement.
