Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 05: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has pledged to enhance maritime connectivity for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, addressing concerns raised by CPI (M) MP R. Sachithanantham. In a recent letter, the Minister acknowledged that the local administration currently operates four vessels for mainland services and is in the process of acquiring additional inter-island vessels to improve connectivity.
To tackle the declining use of these vessels due to a shift towards air travel, Sonowal mentioned plans to charter two 300-passenger ships and acquire four cargo vessels. This move aims to facilitate better passenger and cargo transport between the islands, countering the existing monopolies of private operators and reducing costs of essential goods.
Furthermore, Sonowal discussed ongoing recruitment initiatives, stating that deploying contract crew has created more job opportunities for local youth. The CPI (M) has been advocating for the completion of two large passenger ships and additional smaller vessels, particularly for the Nicobarese tribes, to improve service in the southern islands. The party continues to press for more cargo vessels and permanent jobs for seamen amidst high unemployment rates in the region.
