A proposal for a maritime university in Mangaluru is gaining traction among local leaders and industry stakeholders, aiming to capitalize on coastal Karnataka’s marine potential. Spearheaded by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, the initiative coincides with significant anniversaries: the 500th birth anniversary of Rani Abbakka and the 50th anniversary of the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA). Chowta believes the university could drive port-centric growth in the region.
NMPA Chairman A.V. Ramana has expressed support for the initiative, highlighting the port’s capacity to serve as an institutional anchor. He mentioned that the port can provide operational expertise and assist in creating a curriculum tailored to the dynamics of India’s western coast. The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), led by President Anand Pai, is collaborating closely with Chowta, emphasizing Mangaluru’s historical maritime significance as a fitting location for the university.
The proposed institution aims to equip students with both practical and theoretical knowledge for marine careers, fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill-building in the maritime sector. Ramana also indicated that NMPA is prepared to host a “Centre of Maritime Excellence” as a pilot base for the university.
