The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has approved a sanction of Rs 50.30 crore for the development of an all-weather roll-on/roll-off passenger (ROPAX) pier connecting Kaninali in Bhadrak district and Talachua in Kendrapara district, Odisha under the Sagarmala initiative. The Government of Odisha will fund an additional 50% of the project’s cost, bringing the total capital cost to Rs 110.60 crore. This project aims to reduce travel time for passengers from 6 hours by road to just 1 hour by water, benefiting the local population along the Dhamra River.
The project includes the construction of ROPAX piers at Kaninali and Talachua, alongside infrastructure utilities such as parking lots, navigational aids, and dredging. The expanded berths will accommodate boats, launchers, and other watercraft, with the capacity to carry 10 light motor vehicles, 20 motorcycles, and 60 passengers, ensuring safety for all travelers and vehicles. The development of this project will also create indirect employment opportunities for the local community and shorten the road distance from Talachua to Dhamra by approximately 200 km.
Kaninali and Talachua, situated on the banks of the Dhamra River, are crucial access points for the local population who rely on passenger ferries to cross the river for livelihood purposes. With the lack of road connectivity, this project will enhance passenger and vehicle safety through improved infrastructure, boosting commercial and business activities in the region. Overall, the ROPAX jetty project on the Dhamra River in Odisha will have significant socio-economic benefits for the surrounding areas, promoting growth and development in the region.
