Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane has directed officials to submit a development plan for a water metro in Mumbai within three months. The Kochi Metro Rail Corporation, tasked with surveying the project, has already presented its report to Rane.

Rane emphasized the urgent need to establish an alternative transportation system in Mumbai, highlighting the project’s potential, particularly in key areas such as Bandra, Worli, Versova, south Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai. He urged careful consideration of these locations when determining the water metro routes.

The report outlines the construction of 29 terminals and identifies 10 potential routes, prioritizing those with the highest passenger demand and benefits. Rane also stressed the importance of keeping ticket prices affordable for users. The overall project is expected to cost approximately Rs 2,500 crore and will include passenger facilities at jetty terminals and the acquisition of boats.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing Mumbai’s transport infrastructure, aiming to leverage the city’s water transport potential.
