Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has been awarded a ₹4.4 crore consultancy contract by the Maharashtra government to develop the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Water Metro in Mumbai, inspired by the successful Kochi Water Metro. This contract, secured through a competitive bid, positions KMRL alongside major national consultancies like the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
The DPR will expand on KMRL’s previous feasibility study focusing on connectivity via Mumbai’s waterways, including areas such as Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja. The ambitious project plans to create a 250 km network with 10 routes and 29 terminals, enhancing commuter access across the financial capital of India.
This initiative is set to bolster KMRL’s consultancy arm, providing an additional revenue source beyond ticket sales. Additionally, KMRL is involved in inland water transport studies across 18 cities in 11 states and two Union Territories under the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). Reports for Patna and Srinagar have been completed, with those for Ahmedabad and Guwahati nearing finalization.
