The Maharashtra Maritime Board has approved initiatives to enhance water transport, port infrastructure, shipbuilding, and coastal tourism. During a meeting led by Ports Minister Nitesh Rane, the board emphasized a transparent tender process for the Mumbai Water Metro project and greenlit a shipbuilding cluster in Dighi to attract investments and create jobs.
The Mumbai Water Metro project aims to introduce ferries to ease traffic congestion, marking a significant advancement in India’s water transport. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the state’s commitment to a sustainable system. A partnership with Norway’s Hyke AS will enhance infrastructure and develop advanced vessels, supporting the region’s growing transportation needs.
The Maharashtra Maritime Board has issued an RFP to select a project management consultant for the Mumbai Water Metro Phase 1, aimed at enhancing the city’s water transport. With an estimated cost of ₹1,621 crore, it will develop 16 routes and 26 terminals, expanding connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) secured a ₹4.4 crore consultancy contract from the Maharashtra government to develop the Detailed Project Report for Mumbai’s Water Metro, inspired by Kochi’s success. The project aims for a 250 km network across Mumbai’s waterways, boosting connectivity and enhancing KMRL’s consultancy revenue.
