The 22nd National Maritime Search and Rescue (NMSAR) Board meeting was recently held in Kochi, Kerala by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). This meeting set the stage for the upcoming National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX-24) scheduled to begin on November 29, 2024. Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh highlighted the crucial role of the ICG in search and rescue operations during the opening of the event. The meeting also saw the distribution of National SAR Awards, recognizing exceptional contributions to maritime safety. Notable awardees included MV Singapore Bulker in the Merchant Vessel Category, and Indian Fishing Boats Paramita 5 and Bahubali in the Fishing Boat Category.
The NMSAR Board, established in 2002, has been dedicated to enhancing policies and safety measures related to maritime operations. This year’s meeting emphasized the importance of increased collaboration among various stakeholders to strengthen maritime safety efforts.
