The shipping community in Kochi is facing confusion and ambiguity due to the inconsistent use of the names “Cochin Port” and “Kochi Port.” Despite being officially renamed as Kochi Port in 1996, many documents and communications still refer to it as Cochin Port. This discrepancy is causing problems for international shipping circles, as some ships are unable to locate the port in navigational documents.
Various stakeholders, including the Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry, are calling for immediate action to address this issue. They believe that the inconsistency in naming could disrupt operations and communication, reflecting poorly on the port’s identity and professionalism. The Cochin Port Employees Organisation has also urged the port chairman to change the name to Kochi Port Authority in line with the Major Port Authorities Act 2021.
The renaming of Cochin Port to Kochi Port is seen as a necessary step to enhance the port’s reputation and improve communication among stakeholders. This transition would align the port’s official name with international standards and avoid confusion in the maritime industry. Recognizing the importance of consistent naming practices, stakeholders are urging authorities to take appropriate steps to rectify this issue promptly.
