The Tamil Nadu government has initiated a significant shift towards sustainable maritime practices with the launch of its Shipbuilding Policy 2026. Announced by Chief Minister M K Stalin, the policy aims to position Tamil Nadu as a frontrunner in green shipbuilding and circular economy initiatives, promoting environmentally friendly technologies in the maritime sector.
Central to the policy is the commitment to developing zero-emission vessels that utilize green hydrogen, ammonia, and electric propulsion systems. To encourage these eco-conscious practices, the government is offering incentives, including a 15% capital subsidy for the first five ship recycling yards that achieve environmental certification. These measures align with India’s broader Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which seeks to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry.
To realize its ambitious goals, Tamil Nadu is actively seeking substantial private investment. The government is exploring various models, such as equity participation and asset leasing, to draw in potential investors. Additionally, partnerships with the Indian Maritime University are being established to ensure a skilled workforce adept in Industry 4.0 technologies, thereby enhancing the state’s competitiveness in the global green shipbuilding arena.
