Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to expand, necessitating a doubling of its workforce within three years. As two additional berths and an extended wave breaker are built, the port aims to handle nearly five million containers annually by 2028. This growth underscores a significant demand for employees across various services including security, driving, and technical support.

Currently, the port employs over 700 staff, with more than 300 individuals already training at a state-run skills center. An additional 100 are enrolled in courses tailored to urgent workforce needs. The center plans to hire and train more workers from nearby Thiruvananthapuram and Vizhinjam to meet future demands.

Manoj Nair of Waterline Shipping, which manages ship hulls, expects his team of 20 to grow by 40 as operations ramp up with the port’s expansion. He emphasizes the importance of providing training to local youth to align workforce skills with increasing operational needs.

As the project progresses, there will be a crucial requirement for more drivers, operators, security personnel, and other roles to support the expanded operations, ensuring the port can efficiently manage its increasing container traffic.
