Till December 2024, VO Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin experienced a 7% increase in container volumes, handling 581,557 TEU compared to 543,531 TEU in the same period last year. This growth reflects the port’s consistent expansion efforts, with container throughput steadily rising from 507,735 TEU in 2013-2014 to 747,363 TEU in 2023-24. The port also boasts the fastest container turnaround times in the country for fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24, with terminals offering 30 movements per hour, aligning with international standards.
Maintaining its position as a top major port, VOC Port achieved an average container handling time of 19.92 hours through December 2024. Tuticorin International Container Terminal, Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminals, and PSA SICAL Container Terminal jointly handle 1.6 million TEU annually to meet growing demand. Complementing the port’s operations are two inland container depots and fifteen container freight stations, ensuring efficient container transport.
Enhancing international trade connectivity, VO Chidambaranar Port offers eight weekly departures to Colombo and sailings to various destinations such as Mundra, Pipavav, Cochin, and Jebal Ali. To accommodate increasing container traffic, the port has proposed the construction of an external port with two terminals capable of handling four million TEU each. Following a positive response to the tender post-IPO, the port is poised for future growth in container traffic.
