Thanks to additional funding from the ITF Seafarer’s Trust, thousands of cadets in India will now have access to comprehensive wellness training and support through the Sailors’ Society. The specially designed cadet training program was launched in November 2023, as a result of a collaboration between the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the Global Welfare Accountability Organization for Maritime Welfare transactions. CEO of the Sailors’ Society, Sara Baade, expressed her excitement about the expansion of the partnership, highlighting the importance of equipping cadets for successful maritime careers.

The program has already received positive feedback from participants at Indian maritime training institutions. Abdulgani Serang, program development manager at the ITF Seafarer’s Trust, emphasized the commitment of the trust to addressing the well-being of cadets and the importance of preparing them for life at sea. Tirth Vakil, Operations Manager at the IRT College, praised the Wellness at Sea program as a valuable addition to pre-sea cadet training, providing essential skills for navigating the challenges of seafaring life.

The Wellness at Sea program includes a three-day training course, tailored for Indian cadets and offered in conjunction with the annual cadet conference organized by the Sailors’ Society. Schools hosting the program also receive resources for raising awareness about mental health issues, access to a dedicated Sailors’ Society officer, and a helpline staffed by a team trained to understand and address specific challenges faced by cadets. In addition to the Indian-focused program, cadets worldwide can join peer support groups, subscribe to cadet newsletters, participate in charity organization conferences, and access the innovative mywellness-e-learning program offered by the Sailors’ Society.
