A significant milestone in sustainable maritime energy has been reached with the Approval-in-Principle (AiP) certificate for an ammonia-fueled bunkering vessel. The vessel, designed through a collaboration between NYK and its partners, received critical engineering expertise from Seatrium’s subsidiary, LMG Marine AS. The design will now undergo evaluation by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to address the industry’s need for decarbonization and establish a value chain for ammonia as a marine fuel.
The AiP certification confirms the vessel design’s compliance with safety, technical, and environmental standards, showcasing the consortium’s leadership in alternative fuels for maritime use. The project aims to enhance the feasibility of ammonia as a future fuel, positioning the consortium at the forefront of the maritime energy transition. Tsutomu Yokoyama of NYK Line emphasized the importance of clean ammonia as a sustainable marine fuel, highlighting the consortium’s commitment to safety and efficiency.
Seatrium’s technology company, LMG Marin, played a crucial role in supporting the consortium’s initiative with advanced technical capabilities. The Hazard Identification Study (HAZID) conducted during the concept design phase ensured compliance with safety guidelines for ships using ammonia as fuel. The vessel design incorporates ammonia fuel dual-fuel engines and a bunkering boom to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure operational reliability. Aziz Merchant of Seatrium expressed pride in contributing to the project and advancing sustainability goals.
