Last week, the 8,102 TEU containership ONE Continuity was diverted to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands after losing around 45 containers overboard during severe weather in the Atlantic Ocean. The Singapore-flagged vessel, which was traveling from Le Havre to Singapore, faced heavy seas south of the Canary Islands on December 10, prompting the crew to declare an emergency as powerful waves hit the ship.

Initial assessments showed that almost 100 containers had shifted due to the turbulent conditions, causing nearly 45 to fall into the ocean. Additionally, several containers were damaged after toppling within the stowage. An aerial drone inspection, requested by the ship’s owner, confirmed that about ten rows of containers at the stern collapsed.

Upon arrival at the Port of Las Palmas on December 10, the ONE Continuity docked at Boluda’s terminal with the compromised stacks positioned dockside. A complex operation is currently underway involving specialized personnel, crane operators, and welding experts to recover and re-secure the cargo. Damage to the vessel’s mooring equipment is also being addressed, although it remains uncertain when the vessel will continue its journey to Asia. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries during the incident.

The ONE Continuity, built in 2008, is operated by Ocean Network Express (ONE), a Japanese shipping company formed in 2017 from the merger of MOL, NYK, and K Line, and is owned by Seaspan.
