The Australian Border Force (ABF) has intensified its disruption operations in northern waters, intercepting and destroying five foreign fishing vessels since launching Operation BROADSTAFF. Notably, two vessels were seized on February 20 near Albany Island, followed by another on March 3 in the Escape River and two more off Trochus Island on March 7.

Acting Deputy Commander of Maritime Border Command, Brooke Dewar, emphasized that the increased vessel destruction reflects a proactive enforcement strategy. “Our officers are on the water every day, protecting Sea Country, northern communities, and Australia’s marine resources,” Dewar stated.

Since January 1, the ABF has intercepted 19 foreign fishing vessels in northern Queensland and the Torres Strait, with nine destroyed. Operation BROADSTAFF employs intelligence-led patrols, aerial surveillance, and community reporting to combat illegal fishing in the Torres Strait.

Recent interceptions have successfully prevented illegal fishing activities, showcasing the operation’s effectiveness. Dewar noted that vessel destruction is just one aspect of a comprehensive enforcement approach, which also includes seizing fishing equipment, educating offenders, and escorting vessels out of Australian waters.
