A large container ship, the CMA CGM Mermaid, collided with the quay at Muuga port in Estonia on September 8 around 11:50 UTC, causing significant damage. The vessel, arriving from Kotka, sliced into the quay, resulting in a considerable portion being removed. Nearby, the bulk carrier Belasitza also sustained damage at its bow. The extent of the damage to the CMA CGM Mermaid itself has not yet been revealed.
Images from local media depict the severe impact on the quay, showcasing the depth of the damage caused by the ship’s plumb bow. As of September 11, the CMA CGM Mermaid remained moored alongside the quay wall at Muuga.
The CMA CGM Mermaid is a modern container feeder with a capacity of 2,000 TEU, part of a series of ten sister ships designed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique and HHI. Delivered last year, the vessel is engineered for improved efficiency, boasting a CO2 reduction capability of up to 20%. Its sharp, plumb bow design enhances wave penetration, aligning with contemporary trends in maritime engineering for lower-speed, higher-efficiency vessels.
