On November 18, the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) and the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Board (HKMPDB) formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing maritime education. This agreement underscores their mutual dedication to improving the quality of maritime education and fostering talent within Hong Kong’s maritime sector. The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI), serving as IUMI’s Asian Hub since 2016, will oversee the collaboration’s implementation.
Key initiatives outlined in the MoU include the development of a multi-skilled maritime insurance workforce tailored for the Hong Kong market, utilizing IUMI’s educational resources like the Cargo and Hull Insurance Online Tutorials for local talent development, and engaging in collaborative efforts at maritime events in Hong Kong, focusing on marine insurance education.
Selina Lau, Chief Executive of HKFI, emphasized that the local marine insurance sector would benefit from IUMI’s extensive capacity-building resources. Lars Lange, IUMI Secretary General, attended the signing and highlighted the evolution of IUMI’s education program, which now includes webinars, podcasts, and master classes. He noted the importance of local education and cooperation in training high-potential individuals for the marine insurance field.
