World Fuel Services and West Coast Clean Fuels have launched a methanol bunkering service for vessels in U.S. ports, following a successful pilot delivery in South Florida. This operation offers a scalable and regulatory-compliant solution, featuring U.S. Coast Guard-approved procedures and specially trained personnel, enabling shipowners to incorporate methanol into their fuel strategies.
West Coast Clean Fuels is currently the only U.S. operator with approved truck-to-ship methanol bunkering procedures, equipped for rapid expansion to additional ports. The service was developed through comprehensive risk assessments and operational planning, aligning with recent regulatory guidance from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The companies are poised to meet the growing demand for lower-emission marine fuels as the shipping industry shifts from traditional fuels. Matt Campbell, Technical Manager at West Coast Clean Fuels, emphasized that their procedures not only meet but have influenced regulatory standards, marking a significant milestone in methanol bunkering.
Brad Hurwitz, Senior Vice President at World Fuel Services, noted that their global marine fuel platform ensures efficient and reliable delivery of methanol solutions, providing shipowners with the necessary expertise and access to integrate this cleaner fuel into their operations.
