Women represent only 29% of the global workforce in marine industries, with many in the Pacific holding primarily support roles and rarely advancing to technical or leadership positions. This disparity highlights the need for greater female representation in the sector.

To address this issue, the not-for-profit organization Daughters of the Deep is working to empower women in marine fields through education scholarships, training, and job placements. Their initiatives aim to create pathways for women to enter and excel in the industry.

Seventeen-year-old Esthereena Tonga, a marine conservationist from Niue, expressed her passion for the ocean, stating, “I’ve always felt connected… I love marine life because it’s so full of wonders.” Upon learning about Daughters of the Deep, she felt compelled to participate in their program.

Through such efforts, Daughters of the Deep is not only fostering individual growth but also striving to reshape the future of marine industries by increasing women’s representation and influence.
