In May 2025, the Danish Geodata Agency enhanced maritime cooperation between Denmark and Ghana through a week-long visit focused on training and local capacity building. This initiative aims to improve digital navigation and safety on Lake Volta, the world’s largest artificial reservoir.
Collaborating with the Danish Maritime Authority, the Agency participated in a workshop organized with the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC). The program provided local authorities with essential tools and knowledge to operate a digital navigation platform suited to Lake Volta’s specific needs. Training included hands-on sessions in satellite mapping and crowdsourced data collection, with VLTC sharing insights from its operational experiences.
This effort is part of the “Maritime Strategic Sector Cooperation between Denmark and Ghana – Phase 3” (2022–2025), aimed at enhancing navigational safety through innovative geospatial methods. Satellite technologies are being utilized to identify potential hazards, while crowdsourced data collection from active vessels on the lake is being tested for effectiveness.
The project exemplifies the growing partnership between Denmark and Ghana, emphasizing shared goals of safety, sustainability, and knowledge exchange in the maritime sector.
