Women from across Latin America convened in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from November 17 to 19 for a regional workshop aimed at enhancing gender-responsive maritime policies and legislation. This initiative, part of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Women in Maritime Gender Programme, supports the Women in Maritime Network of Latin America (Red MAMLa) and seeks to foster inclusive governance and increase women’s involvement in maritime decision-making.

Approximately 50 women representing 19 countries participated in the event, which included a Regional Workshop on Gender-Sensitive Policies and Legislation and the VII General Assembly of MAMLa. The sessions focused on strengthening MAMLa’s ability to formulate and implement gender-responsive policies at both national and regional levels.

Key discussions revolved around integrating gender perspectives in maritime governance, advancing women’s roles in the sector, addressing gaps in inclusive legal frameworks identified in regional studies, and mapping stakeholders to bolster gender equality initiatives. The agenda also encouraged knowledge sharing, allowing participants to exchange best practices from their home countries.

These efforts align with Sustainable Development Goal 5, promoting gender equality, and reflect the IMO’s commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion within the maritime industry. The event received financial support from the Republic of Korea through the IMO’s Technical Cooperation Programme.
