The European Union is funding a cross-border initiative in the Øresund region to enhance carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies, promoting renewable energy and sustainable fuel production. This three-year project, backed by the Interreg Øresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak program, aims to create a Danish-Swedish collaboration platform to integrate CCUS into the regional energy system.

With a budget exceeding $1.4 million (€1.2 million), including an EU grant of approximately $860,000 (€740,000), the project will focus on developing market synergies, establishing a green CCUS corridor, and fostering international promotion of the Øresund region as a CCUS hub. The initiative will utilize captured biogenic CO2 combined with green hydrogen and renewable energy to produce sustainable fuels for sectors like shipping and aviation.

Copenhagen Malmö Port leads the project through its innovation hub, Ocean Valley, collaborating with various partners, including E.ON Energy Infrastructure and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. Project manager Kristoffer Møller Vendelbo emphasized that the initiative aims to transform isolated efforts into a coordinated cross-border ecosystem, ultimately advancing CCUS development in the region.
