The European Commission is set to propose measures aimed at boosting the EU shipping industry by increasing the production of goods and services within the EU. These “Made in EU” proposals will be presented next week, coinciding with a broader initiative to promote local products, a plan that has sparked division among EU member states.
The draft document indicates that public authorities will be encouraged to prioritize suppliers based on factors beyond price, such as sustainability and the origin of the goods. This shift could enhance the EU’s production of various vessels, including ferries, research ships, tugs, and icebreakers.
Additionally, the European Investment Bank (EIB) may facilitate the demand for EU-manufactured ships by easing access to financing for shipowners.
On February 10, the EU executive will unveil a series of proposals aimed at enhancing the shipbuilding and shipping sectors, as well as improving security and sustainability in ports. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to bolster competitiveness within the industry.
