Bureau Veritas (BV), a French classification society, has joined forces with thirty European companies from the nuclear and maritime sectors to expedite the integration of nuclear technology in maritime applications. This partnership, formalized in a declaration titled “Declaration of Cooperation for Accelerating Nuclear for Maritime Applications to meet Climate Ambitions,” was signed at an exhibition in Paris on November 5. BV officials described this initiative as a significant step towards uniting international stakeholders from various fields, including nuclear, maritime, research, and finance, to promote the safe and sustainable use of nuclear technologies, which are crucial for energy transition and decarbonization.

The signatories have committed to ongoing collaboration to tackle technological, regulatory, and societal challenges, while also identifying pilot projects to test nuclear-powered solutions. The declaration emphasizes the maritime sector’s vital role in achieving global climate goals and the necessity to adopt low-carbon energy systems, particularly through the use of small modular reactors (SMRs), which are seen as sustainable and reliable options for maritime energy needs.

Moreover, participants have called for the establishment of a robust European ecosystem to support the development of marine nuclear solutions, urging governments to provide regulatory clarity and equitable access to climate finance. Bureau Veritas executives highlighted the transformative potential of integrating nuclear technology into maritime operations, stressing the importance of safety, transparency, and international cooperation.
