Fire crews in the Port of Aberdeen, Scotland, have been working tirelessly to extinguish a cargo hold fire on a Panama-flagged bulker named Lowlands Diamond. The ship, owned by a Japanese company, reported the fire as it was approaching the South Harbor at the Port of Aberdeen. Despite the intense efforts of several fire departments and specialist teams, the ship and port are not in immediate danger.
The fire was contained to a cargo hold on the vessel, which was constructed in 2023 and is approximately 600 feet in length. The operation to put out the fire was described as “complex and unusual” by fire officials, who anticipated that it would take several days to complete. The process involved removing the burning cargo from the hold, as reported by local media outlets.
Images published by the local Press & Journal newspaper showed charred cargo being removed from the vessel, surrounded by shipping containers. The Port of Aberdeen confirmed that operations at the South Harbor had not been disrupted by the fire and expressed gratitude to the fire teams for their efforts. The situation remains under control as authorities continue to work towards fully extinguishing the blaze.
