A fire on Chevron’s Benguela-Belize-Lobito-Tomboco (BBLT) platform off Angola has resulted in injuries to 17 individuals, with four in serious condition. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning during a scheduled maintenance period, as the platform had been shut down since May 1 for repairs. Chevron confirmed that employees quickly controlled the fire, which broke out on the cellar deck.
Chevron’s local subsidiary, Cabgoc, is prioritizing the safety of personnel and investigating the incident’s causes, with support from the Angolan regulator ANPG.
The BBLT platform, located approximately 50 nautical miles off Angola’s Cabinda coast, features a unique design that includes a 1,200-foot flexible platform jacket, enhancing its resistance to wave action.
With a maximum production capacity of 220,000 barrels per day, the impact of the fire on the platform’s operational timeline remains uncertain.
