Brands Hatch represents a pivotal advancement as the first tanker equipped with BAR Technologies’ WindWings, signaling a broader shift towards wind-assisted propulsion in the maritime industry. This innovative technology is expected to cut fuel consumption by around 1,200 tonnes annually, leading to a reduction of over 3,800 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. When compared to modern vessels built in 2022, this translates to a 30% efficiency improvement.

Union Maritime is spearheading the integration of wind-assisted propulsion to enhance shipping efficiency and sustainability. The delivery of Brands Hatch is a crucial step in their strategy to deploy a fleet of 34 wind-assisted ships, with at least 14 featuring WindWings. Once operational, this fleet will be the largest of its kind globally, ensuring compliance with sustainability standards through 2030.

The WindWings will be classified as a zero-GHG energy source, boosting Brands Hatch’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and supporting compliance with the new IMO Greenhouse Gas Fuel Intensity (GFI) standard. Union Maritime has collaborated with industry partners to ensure a smooth rollout of these innovative systems.

Laurent Cadji, Managing Director at Union Maritime, highlighted that Brands Hatch exemplifies the company’s commitment to sustainable technology in response to evolving regulations. John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, emphasized the collaboration’s significance, stating that it embodies the leadership necessary for transformative change in the industry.
